Security - True Firewalls

The increase in the dependency on Internet to satisfy an ever greater need for information, required through a normal day to get the job done, the availability of many Web enable applications public and private and the availability of broadband capabilities across the land had pushed even small businesses to continuously be connected to the Internet.

By having a semi permanent or permanent connection to the Internet makes a business in fact to have a presence on the Internet. Even if a business does not offer a Web service that advertise its presence, it can still be detected, tracked and most likely targeted for an attack.

The purpose of a Firewall if to provide an Internet user with the ability to control, limit and deny access to the internal computer resources from the outside wild Internet. A true firewall is a computer dedicated to this function, not just a mickey mouse program running in a PC.

A firewall is at the forefront of the internal network facing the Internet on one side and keeping the internal network behind it. All internet traffic in and out goes through it. The software in the Firewall analyzes the traffic and made a decision in weather or not to allow a packet.

We offer the IPCop firewall solution which is based on industry standards; it is based on Linux and can normally be installed in any PC which makes the PC the dedicated Firewall. We normally use refurbished PC which lower the price of the solution even more.  IPCop is a real Firewall capable of protecting from small to large corporate networks.

The firewalls topic has been abused by the marketers of Windows PC software and useless windows only devices that are very limited in doing Firewall work. Windows PC software is of no use when there is more that one PC and (useless) Windows only devices that claim being Firewall are good at charging on a per license base, but allowing very limited or no ability to tune the security to your needs.

In contrast with other Firewall solutions IPCop does not require Licenses does not limit the number of users and provides for great flexibility which allows to fit it in a large variety of network topologies and situations.

IPCop handles up to four network interfaces, which allows to better organize the network resources accordance with its use and service provide. The Red interface connects to the Internet, the Green interface connects to the Internal Network, the blue interface allows to separate the Wireless traffic, and the Orange interface is the DMZ for Mail and Web Servers.

IPCop Linux based Firewall is a very good deal, you get a true real Firewall Linux based Software that can be installed in a PC and dedicated for the Firewall work. The PC requirements are minimum and many no longer in use PC fit very well the requirements.

I have installed IPCOp firewall in a Compaq Presario SFF that has a PII 500MHz and 256MB of memory and it can server about 100+ users, performance is just fine.
